Danmark: PhD scholarship in Engineering Systems Management
News Photo

DTU Management Engineering is seeking candidates for a fully funded PhD position. Your focus will be to integrate advanced risk quantification methods into real-life decision making processes.

Application deadline: 31 October 2014

DTU Management Engineering offers one 3-year PhD fellowship. The position will be based in the Engineering Systems Group, and the research project will be carried out in association with the Risk Research Group.

The Engineering Systems Group focuses on understanding and improving the ways in which engineering systems and their sub-systems are managed throughout their life cycles. Our research spans the boundaries of 1. interdisciplinary engineering, 2. project, program and portfolio management, and 3. related policy and strategy processes. By focusing on issues of complexity, human behavior, and uncertainty, we develop methods and tools for public and private organizations to be more effective in the design, construction and operation of large-scale engineering systems.

Responsibilities and tasks

We invite highly talented candidates to apply for the scholarship. The research will focus on assessing the capabilities of advanced risk quantification methods for project and program management in the context of large scale engineering systems. Your focus will be to integrate advanced risk quantification methods into real-life decision making processes. We consider typical project and program risks, such as cost, schedule, system performance and safety related risks.

Our highly developed societies rely on large-scale socio-technical engineering systems to enable and improve our standard of living. However, the past performance in engineering and operating these engineering systems has been appallingly poor, particularly regarding the ability of engineering managers to manage critical risks from the technological, economic, psychological and political domain.

The research conducted as part of the PhD will address three tightly related aspects regarding the way we manage risks and uncertainties throughout the life-cycle of engineering systems:

  1. Better understand key risks and uncertainty-related information needs during critical decision making situations in project and program management;
  2. Characterize novel risk quantification methods, including non-probabilistic methods, regarding their applicability in the design and operation of engineering systems; and
  3. Integrate this knowledge into novel risk management approaches that enhance current project and program management processes. The proposed approaches will be validated in cooperation with our industry partners.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. We also welcome applications from excellent management science students with a strong background in engineering (e.g. through a relevant bachelor’s degree).

Application

Please submit your online application no later than October 31, 2014. Applications must be submitted as one pdffile containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply online," fill in the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one pdf file.

Scientific Symposium

Communicating risks and uncertainties concerning environmental hazards

What the public needs from policy and science

December 13th 2013, 9.30 -17.00

De Veranda, Amsterdam

Advances in technology and societal changes created new types of potential harmful environmental hazards. Scientific evidence concerning the risks of specific environmental agents is often incomplete, inconclusive or ambiguous, and judgments of experts may  vary widely. Adequately informing the public about the risks then becomes a challenge. The general public demands certainty and clear messages, and policymakers may seek guidance and justification for courses of action. At the symposium, scientists from various disciplines will share and discuss scientific outcomes and insights on relevant issues and useful approaches in the communication of risk and uncertainties.

Aims:

·         Bridge the gaps between the perspectives of science, policy, and the public.

·         Establish consensus about effective methods and guidelines that may help risk communicators to ensure that their communication contains relevant and accurate information  the public and policy can use to make informed judgments and choices.

·         Identify gaps in scientific knowledge and set goals and priorities for further research.

Call for Papers for Special Issue of Psyecology
News Photo Call for Papers for Special Issue of Psyecology: "A changing world: coping with environmental, social and economic risks". 1000 word abstract by 31 October 2013. http://www.fia.es/journals/psyecology/home

Special issue Psyecology: A changing world: coping with environmental, social and economic risks

http://www.fia.es/journals/psyecology/home

Scope

How do people cope with the risks to the self and relevant others, which they face in today’s world? How do people respond and which affective and cognitive resources do they draw upon, to face individual and situational demands and threats?

Understanding the coping strategies and resources used to implement these, is an important task for social scientists, not only to mitigate current risks but also to prevent future and emergent risks. By doing this, scientists can achieve the goal of enhancing people’s adaptive processes.

With this goal in mind, this special issue will focus on strategies and resources used by individuals to cope with environmental, social and economic risks. This takes into consideration the cognitive, behavioural and affective dimensions of coping, including but not restricted to:
  • Coping with risk uncertainty
  • Social and place identity as moderators of risk perception and threat coping
  • The role of affective processes (e.g., affective appraisals, associations and emotions) and of cognitive processes (e.g., heuristics) in coping with threats
  • Expected coping with future risks (e.g. temporal discounting and affective forecasting) and the influence of prior coping on future reappraisals of the same or similar threats
  • New research methods to assess threat coping
  • Interventions designed to enhance adaptation to social, economic and environmental threats and demands
  • Coping with threats posed by natural and non-natural disasters
  • Coping with threats posed by hazardous technologies

Procedure

The articles submitted can be written in English or Spanish, following the journal’s guidelines for authors (http://www.fia.es/journals/psyecology/guidelines).

Initially, a 1,000 word extended abstract in English must be submitted; deadline for the reception of abstracts is October 31st, 2013. Please send your extended abstract in MS Word format as an attachment to the following e-mail address: Rui.Gaspar@iscte.pt. The submission email should include in the subject line, the title of this special issue. In addition, your abstract should include the following information: title, author names and affiliations, main text (1,000 words), and references.

Authors will be notified if the extended abstract has been approved by November 21st, 2013.

Upon approval by the invited Editorial Staff, authors will be asked to submit full papers (not exceeding 20 pages in length or 5,000 words, including notes, references, and all other elements), before February 28th, 2014. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by outside experts.
For further information, please see the attached file.

Looking forward to receive your proposals!

Call for papers "Risk, Uncertainty and Policy"
News Photo Inter-disciplinary Conference: Risk, Uncertainty and Policy

Location: Östersund, Sweden. Date: 23-25 March 2011

Sociology of Risk and Uncertainty Research Network (ESA)

Inter-disciplinary Conference

Risk, Uncertainty and Policy

Mid-Sweden University, Östersund

23-25 March 2011

Keynote speakers:

This is a call for papers for a conference which will explore understandings of risk and uncertainty in their relation to policy (www.riskanduncertainty.net/esa/).

Conceptions of risk and uncertainty influence the formation of policy at various levels - while policy-making may, in turn, legitimate or otherwise influence societal perspectives of risk and uncertainty. That policy approaches to similar phenomena vary so much across countries highlights the constructed nature of risk governance, and also the politico-institutional structures in which responses to risk are embedded. The political-economy of policy-making ensures that certain groups within society are better able to influence policy than others, meaning certain risks are prioritised while others are neglected. Correspondingly policy decisions distribute risks, and impact on associated perceptions, unevenly across society in terms of class, ethnicity, gender and age.

The conference seeks to include papers which explore these and related topics across a range of empirical contexts and from a number of theoretical angles. Themes will include: sense-making of risk; health risks; mental health policy; risk governance; risk and crime; professional approaches to risk; risk management and uncertainty; inequality and risk; risk and everyday life; and social theories of risk.

The conference will take place in Östersund, will be hosted by Mid-Sweden University’s Risk and Crisis Research Center and is co-sponsored by the European Sociological Association. For those that want to stay on for the weekend, the location will be very close to the top ski resort in Scandinavia - Åre.

Timetable

Abstracts, limited to 200 words plus full name, institution, and the author(s) contacts, should be sent by Nov 31st, 2010 to the following e-mail address: larsake.lindstrom@miun.se Notification of acceptance will be announced by December 15th.

Registration and registration fee

Participants will be required to pay a nominal registration fee of 50 Euros (100 Euros for non-members of ESA) by 15 January 2011. This will include coffee breaks, lunch and one dinner. Late-registration (from 16th Jan 2011 onwards) will cost 100 Euros (150 non-ESA members).

Travel and accommodation

Participants will need to make their own travel arrangements and hotel reservations. Conference organizers will provide information about accommodation, as well as suggestions about different alternatives for travelling to Östersund. This information will be made available nearer to the end of the year.
