SRA Europe conference in Trondheim an exciting event
The 2013 annual conference of SRA-E was held at NTNU in Trondheim on 17–19 June. Entitled “Safe Societies – coping with complexity and major risk”, the conference brought together some 200 international researchers from 34 countries.
The conference started with a concert in the magnificent Nidarosdomen CATHEDRAL, Trondheim’s most famous attraction. At the subsequent welcome reception participants enjoyed tasting some of the traditional Norwegian delicacies.
Highlights of the conference for SRA-E participants were the plenary presentations that all focused on increasing safety and preventing incidents. Special emphasis was on black swans: highly improbable events with catastrophic consequences.
Bjørn Otto Sverdrup, the head of the secretariat of the Norwegian 22 July Commission, opened the conference with a powerful presentation of his experiences with terrorism. He was followed by Gudela Grote (ETH Zurich, Switzerland), Per Morten Schiefloe (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway), Ann Bostrom (University of Washington, USA), Nick Pidgeon (Cardiff University, UK) and Paul Amyotte (Dalhousie University, Canada) who all gave very inspiring keynotes.
Special symposia and individual oral presentations addressed a wide variety of topics within the realms of risk assessment, risk management, risk governance and risk communication.
The poster session on Monday, June 17th, was accompanied by a reception. Participants enjoyed listening to the university’s talented student’s choir, Pirum, that provided excellent entertainment.
At the SRA-E annual General Assembly on Tuesday, the SRA-E student scholarships were awarded. Recipients were Marijke Hermans (University of Maastricht, the Netherlands) and Eva Lermer (Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, Germany). Both will receive a contribution worth 500 euro to their conference expenses.
At the same meeting, we were pleased to welcome Lars Bodsberg as the new President of SRA Europe, and Michael Siegrist as the new President Elect.
The conference dinner took place at the beautiful manor of Ringve and the National Museum of Music and Musical Instruments with its stunning botanical garden. Even at 22.30 hours there was sufficient daylight for an enjoyable stroll.
Preparations for the 23st SRA-E conference which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, on 16-18 June 2014 are already underway. Focus will be on the analysis and governance of risks beyond boundaries.
During the final plenary session, local organiser Seda Kundak surprised the participants by giving away a Golden ticket for free participation in the 2014 conference. We hope to see your there!

Travel to Trondheim
The Norwegian conference page (www.srae2013.no) has a map on Trondheim. Please click here for this map.
Getting to Trondheim
The city of Trondheim is situated by the Trondheim fjord in the middle of Norway in Northern Europe (see map). The location provides for quick and easy access by air from the European Continent, America and Asia. Norway is a small country and moderate distances also make travel by car or train interesting options. |
|
Travelling by Air
Trondheim Airport Værnes (TRD) is the local airport of Trondheim and is located in Stjørdal, about 30 kilometers to the north-east of the city center. The airport offers regular domestic flights to and from most major cities in Norway, as well as daily flights with service to a few European cities.
|
Trondheim Airport Værnes (TRD) offers multiple daily flights with service to Copenhagen Airport Kastrup (CPH), Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), and London Stansted Airport (STN).
Copenhagen is the Scandinavian hub for Star Alliance, (with partner airlines SAS, United, Lufthansa, Air Canada and Air New Zealand), and offers excellent connections to most parts of the world.
Amsterdam is the central European hub for the Skyteam Airline Alliance (with partner airlines KLM, Northwest, Continental and Air France), with even more connections to all parts of the world.
Nonstop flights between London (UK) and Trondheim are offered by the Norwegian airline Norwegian.no
|
Travelling through Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL)
Many international travellers go to Trondheim through Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL).
Oslo Airport offers connections to most major cities in Europe, in particular with frequent flights to the imporant hubs Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), London Airports Gatwick and Heathrow (LGW, LHR), Copenhagen Airport (CPH), Frankfurt am Main (FRA) and Paris Airports de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY). In addition, Continental offers transatlantic flights to New York (Newark, EWR).
There are up to two departures with service to Trondheim Airport per hour in the daytime. Flight time from Oslo to Trondheim is about one hour. Airlines with service to TRD from OSL: SAS Braathens, Norwegian, and Wideroe.
Note: Some budget airlines offer international flights to Oslo taking you to Sandefjord Airport Torp (TRF) rather than to OSL. If your connecting flight to Trondheim is scheduled to depart from OSL, please factor in an additional 2 hours of travel time by bus between TRF and OSL.
|
|
Getting from Trondheim Airport to the Conference Venue
Airport Shuttle
The airport shuttle ("Flybussen") to the center of the city corresponds with all flight arrivals, and is the easiest (and cheapest) way to get to city. On its route it passes most major hotels in city. Ask the driver for guidance when you purchase your ticket.
The shuttle buses are lined up in the street just outside the arrival terminal. Tickets are purchased after boarding the bus, and the fare is currently NOK 90 (major credit cards accepted).
Taxi
Taxi from the airport to the city center is about NOK 600 depending on the time of day (night fares are more expensive).
Travelling by Train
Going by train to Trondheim is easily combined with arriving in Oslo by plane as the train passes Oslo Airport Gardermoen on its way from Oslo to Trondheim. (Travel time from Oslo Airport Gardermoen is about 6 hours). See Norwegian State Railways (NSB) for more information.
Trondheim Central Station is right in the city center.
Travelling by Car
There are a number of liners that will take you and your car from the continent (Denmark, Germany) or the British Isles to ports in the south of Norway (Oslo, Sandefjord, Larvik and Kristiansand) or west of Norway (Bergen, Haugesund and Stavanger). Most of these have daily departures in both directions. See Color Line and DFDS SEAWAYS for details.
You also have the option of crossing the Øresund bridge from Denmark to Sweden and driving through Sweden to Oslo and on to Trondheim.
Driving Directions Coming from the South
The E6 highway runs from Oslo north to Trondheim.
